The Uhuru Institute Youth Leadership and Entrepreneurship Camp is a flagship programme of The Uhuru Institute for Social Development to inspire youth to get involved in shaping their personal development as well as that of their countries.  At Uhuru Institute we understand youth as a period of transition from childhood (dependence) to adulthood (Independence), accommodating perceptions and definitions to the specific context and situation. It is a particular period in life where the lifestyle choices and opportunities can have a long-term and lasting impact on a person’s future. Successful transition is therefore vital and it involves:

  1. Growing up healthy
  2. Forming families
  3. Exercising citizens’ rights
  4. Starting a productive working life; and
  5. Learning for work and life

The Uhuru Institute youth development programme aspires to motivate youth in realizing productivity, unity, peace, prosperity and happiness. The initiative attracts youth from all the divides that have plagued humanity i.e.  religious, cultural institutions, business and location.  The camps have a catalog of indoor and outdoor activities carefully selected to groom responsible youths.

The indoor activities include: -Expert presentations, peer to peer discussions through debates, panels, and group exercises, story extracts from videos amongst others.

The outdoor activities include: – learning visits to incubation centres and business premises, as well as sports and health clinics

Both the indoor and outdoor activities provide training for civic responsibility, entrepreneurship, business development, cooperatives, financial literacy while creating unique opportunities to put practical skills.

Since, TUI’s inception, we have had 8 youth camps that have benefited over 1000 youth from Uganda and Kenya, with testimonies of youth vying for leadership positions, in the councils and in parliament and several youth starting individual and cooperative businesses. TUI continues to support the youth camp alumni’s by connecting them to opportunities beyond the camps.  The youth camps open doors to bigger and better options for holistic youth development.

In 2017, TUI has organized 3 activities for the youth namely: – 2 youth leadership camps and 1 youth agribusiness caravan. The camps will inspire youth to undertake different leadership and business roles in society while the caravan is specific to agribusiness.
